About John Thoreau & Co.Founded: 1824 to about 1852 Corporate headquarters: Concord, Mass. Cool fact: Henery David would of been around 3 years old when his father started the pencil business. Apparently after graduating Harvard in 1838 and more then likely during his Harvard years, Henery helped his father out in the family business. Eventually elevating the quality of the lead to a highly prized status. These pencils were marked J. Thoreau & Son 1, 2, 3 & 4 and probably date in the 1840's. Wondering how the earlier pencils were marked.
