Nickel Pencil No.2

Brand: St. Joseph Pencil Co.

Made in: USA

Mid-20th century pencils were sometimes advertised as "nickel pencils," selling for five cents a pop. Unclear whether this model ever sold for a nickel, or if it was simply a model name. If this was in fact the price (probably was), it's fairly unique in that St. Joseph stamped it on the pencil itself. The Fifth Ave. and Vibra-Tone had something similar for a period of time.

About St. Joseph Pencil Co.

From about 1940 to 1964, the pencils stamped with "St. Joseph" were actually made by Shelbyville, TN-based National Pencil Company. St. Joseph Pencil Co. was owned by Memphis-based Plough, Inc., a drug manufacturer that purchased National in 1964.
