Brand: John Thoreau & Co.
Made in: USA
This particular pencil comes to me by way of a large Victorian in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. Mounted as such and who knows for how long. The pencil is circa 1830's.
According to the Concord Museum there are three known printings on the pencils: J. Thoreau & Son Concord Mass"; "John Thoreau" & "J Thoreau & Co.", as seen above.
I've not seen one for sale in the market place in 20 years until now! One recently sold for $2200 without any branding....oh, imagine that.
Original price was: $4,500.00.$3,500.00Current price is: $3,500.00.

Based in Concord, Massachusetts and manufactured pencils between about 1824 and 1852. Henry David would have been around seven years old when his father started the company. Apparently, after graduating Harvard in 1838 and possibly even during his Harvard years, Henry worked with his father in the family pencil business. They eventually elevated the quality of the lead to a highly prized status.
