Brand: Benjamin Ball Manufacturer
Made in: USA
Approximately 200 years old, this rather crudely made, unmarked pencil with a squared lead likely dates to the 1820s. It is slightly shorter and thinner than the average pencil—characteristics I have also observed in examples from J. Thoreau & Sons. These features are consistent with early 19th-century pencil manufacturing in Massachusetts.
Between the early 1820s and 1850s there were several small pencil makers near Boston, including William Munroe, John Thoreau, Joseph Dixon, and Benjamin Ball.
