200 years old!! Learning something new about pencils all the time. This rather crudely made unmarked, squared lead pencil is circa 1820’s and slightly shorter and thinner than the average pencil. I noticed those characteristics with my J. Thoreau & Sons as well. Clear indications of early 19th century pencil manufacturing in Massachusetts.
Between the early 1820s and 1850s there were several small pencil makers near Boston, including William Munroe, John Thoreau, Joseph Dixon, and Benjamin Ball.
