Nearly 200 years old!! Learning something new about pencils all the time. These rather crudely made unmarked, squared lead pencils are circa 1820’s and are slightly shorter and thinner than the average pencil. I noticed those characteristics with my J. Thoreau & Sons as well. Clear indications of early 19th century pencil manufacturing in Massachusetts.
Between the early 1820s and 1850s there were several small pencil makers near Boston, including William Munroe, John Thoreau, Joseph Dixon, and Benjamin Ball.
