Oh my! Rare Black Edition!! The bottom pencil shows a third side of the pencil with Japanese characters “Chosen by the Society for Penmanship Education in Wakayama Prefecture” – it appears these were specially made for this Society.

Characters on the reverse translation:  white middle line of kanji

“For the use in pen copying”
but it needs explanation of background.
The government issues official certificates to
people who pass official exams in which they are required to
hand-copy a printed material either by brush (of calligraphy) or
by some kind of pen (fountain pen, pencil, ball-point pen, etc.)
This pencil says it fits the use in the exam of the latter.
