This particular pencil comes to me by way of a large Victorian in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. Mounted as such and who knows for how long. The pencil is circa 1830's.
According to the Concord Museum there are three known printings on the pencils: J. Thoreau & Son Concord Mass"; "John Thoreau" & "J Thoreau & Co.", as seen above.
You found it! Limit one per customer. Based in Concord, Massachusetts and manufactured pencils between about 1824 and 1852. Henry David would have been around seven years old when his father started the company. Apparently, after graduating Harvard in 1838 and possibly even during his Harvard years, Henry worked with his father in the family pencil business. They eventually elevated the quality of the lead to a highly prized status.
