William Munroe HH

Brand: William Munroe

Made in: USA

It is believed that William Munroe was the first person to manufacture and sell pencils in the United States, beginning around 1812. After speaking with the Director of Collections at the Concord Museum, I understand that this particular model likely dates to the 1840s, when Munroe was producing as many as one million pencils per year.

This pencil is slightly more than half an inch shorter than a Dixon's Beginner, but it shares the same large diameter. These pencils are notably thick and feature a substantial rectangular graphite core, as shown in the gallery image.

About William Munroe

Pencil-making in 19th-century America is part history and part folklore. William Munroe is often cited as one of the earliest American pencil manufacturers, along with John Thoreau, Ebenezer Wood, Horace Hosmer, and Benjamin Ball.
