Founded by Max Grumbacher in 1905 in New York City, and has historically made pencils in Germany, Czechoslovakia, and the USA. The brand was acquired by Massachusetts-based Chartpak in 2006 (Chartpak also owns the legendary Koh-I-Noor brand). While they no longer produce pencils with the Grumbacher name, other art supplies are still in production.
