Manufacturer G & Cie Givet No.3

Brand: Gilbert

Made in: France

This specific pencil was manufactured between 1880-1920.

  • The Factory (Givet): The Les Crayons Gilbert factory operated its primary manufacturing hub in Givet (Ardennes), France. The factory officially closed its doors in Givet in 1932 due to fierce competition from German pencil manufacturers in Nuremberg. Any pencil explicitly stamped with "Givet" was made prior to this closure.
  • The "G & Cie" Stamp: The "G & Cie" (Gilbert & Compagnie) branding and typography style seen on this round, unvarnished cedar casing were widely used on their commercial products from the late 19th century into the early 20th century (roughly 1880–1920)

About Gilbert

Founded in 1830, this French company merged with Conté in 1960. For a period of time both Gilbert and Conté produced pencils with the same model name: Criterium.
