Invader 511 No.1

Brand: Wallace Pencil Co.

Made in: USA

Hard to find No.1.  This model has the Concentric "Bullseye" Eraser Design.  During the 1920s and 1930s, fountain pens and early ballpoints were growing in popularity, but mistakes were highly permanent. To solve this without requiring a completely separate desk tool, pencil manufacturers built a two-in-one system directly into the ferrule.

  • The Outer Ring: Made of soft, non-abrasive pink or red rubber, formulated for standard graphite pencil marks.
  • The Inner Center Core: A tight, dense circle running down the middle of the plug. This core was heavily packed with fine abrasives (like pumice or silica). It was highly rigid and designed precisely to scrape away paper fibers to lift ink or heavily stubborn carbon copying marks.

About Wallace Pencil Co.

Founded in 1915, St. Louis-based Wallace Pencil Company was a prolific producer of pencils before being acquired by Dixon in the 1980s. According to the Smithsonian, "By 1979 it sold 120 million pencils per year. Before the 1950s, the firm packaged some of these pencils, such as its Motif line, in metal tins."
