Brand: X - Unknown
Made in: England
Unknown company received in a box from England. On the reverse is etched Made in USA. Could have been blank stock sent overseas or it could be a USA company....I'll have to look into it. Yep, just as I suspected. J.A. Reynolds, Birmingham appears to be manufacturers of drawing and drafting instruments. NO doubt they weren't making their own pencils, but at one point imported blank stock from the USA. I'd say this pencil can be dated to the later part of the operation circa 1920's. Here is what I found:
James Alfred Reynolds traded as J.A. Reynolds & Co (manufacturer and importer of drawing instruments) in the latter half of the 19th century. He entered into a brief partnership with A.G. Thornton in 1885/86 after which he resumed his original company which continued producing technical drawing instruments into the first quarter of the 20th century.
I call these “Quazi” brands because I’m not 100% certain which company actually made them. Sometimes the pencils are stamped with a stationery store or maybe even the name of someone famous. But my hunch is they were produced by another company. If you have more information about any of these vintage pencils I would love to know!
